Telfar
New York designer Telfar Clemens introduced the ballet flat in his Spring 2014 line, a shoe he called “the basic shoe.” Telfar has branded himself as “fashion for everyone” and beginning in 2014 he made “ballet flats for everyone” a part of his designes for several years. This year’s offering was probably the most classic and practical use of the ballet flat for men.
2015
Dries Van Noten
Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten included a cross-strap mary-jane style in his Spring 2015 line. Paired with cropped pants and shorts it showed the versatility of open-vamp shoes for men.
DressCamp by Toshikazu Iwaya
Japanese designer Toshikazu Iwaya incorporated mary-janes in his DressCamp men’s collection at Fashion Week in Tokyo for both the Spring and Fall lines.
2016
This year saw a number of designers incorporate the ballet flat, or its cousin the mary-jane, into their menswear designs.
Gucci
Designer Alessandro Michele brought designs that were in some ways throwback to the 60s and 70s, but included a ballet flat for men that was very reminiscent of the Spanish “abarka,” but with more design and color. The styles Michele put on the runway were decidedly more feminine, but still showing the versatility of the ballet flat for men.
Pushbutton by Seung Gun Park
Korean designer Seung Gun Park incorporated ballet fats on the men in his Fall 2016 streetwear lineup.
Robert Geller
Designer Robert Geller included mary janes in his Spring 2016 line paired with cropped pants and shorts for a classy but casual style for men.
Telfar
Telfar continued his use of ballet flats in his designs, this year with a sneaker-like ballet flat for men with comfortable unisex designs that showed the versatility of the ballet flat on men.

Vivienne Westwood put men in dresses and ballet flats in her Spring 2016 line further pushing the boundaries of unisex fashion.
2017
Moto Guo
Malaysian fashion designer Moto Guo incorporated mary janes in his 2017 menswear lineup that featured child-like outfits and a unisex look.
Telfar
Telfar brought back his sneaker-like ballet flat in 2017 but pairing with brighter casual attire than last year. He also showed the unisex versatility of the ballet flat by including women in his show wearing the same flats as men.
Wales Bonner
British fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner paired ballet flats with cropped pants and skirts for men and created a wearable unisex look in her 2017 Spring collection.
2018
Ludovic de Saint Sernin
Ludovic de Saint Sernin incorporated lace-up ballet flats into his Fall 2018 lineup. This was the only men’s ballet flat observed for this year.
2019
2019 was a banner year for the ballet flat with many designers incorporating the look into their menswear designs.
Bode
Designer Emily Bode incorporated ballet flats in her Fall 2019 menswear collection pairing with an antique look.
Maison Margiella
French fashion company Maison Margiella reintroduced mary-janes on men to the runway after a drought of several years in bold, wild and feminine styles.

Thom Browne
American designer Thom Browne featured brogued mary-janes with feminine-cut dresses and cropped pants in his Fall 2019 menswear lineup.
Vaquera
After a couple of years on the fashion scene and putting men in heels on the runway, the design team of Vaquera created some practical and not-so-practical designs incorporating ballet flats for men. Vaquera has built their brand on bridging between the masculine and feminine.
Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood brought back the ballet flat in a couple of her 2019 Fall ready-to-wear collection menswear designs.
